Acne Products

There are a large number of over the counter acne products available to buy today. There are also different types of acne medication that may be prescribed by your physician including antibiotics, but for the purposes of this page I will be considering only the type of acne products available from your local drugstore or supermarket or by mail order online.

The first thing every bad acne sufferer wants to know is whether the commonly available acne products actually work. You just need to be aware that what might work for one person, may not work for you as there are different types and causes of acne and so what may work like magic for your friend, may not help you at all.

Many of the less expensive topical creams, gels or lotions available contain Witch Hazel or Benzoyl Peroxide as an active ingredient, and if you only have a mild case of acne you may find that these work very well for you. If you try one brand and it doesn’t work then check the ingredients on any other brand before you buy to make sure it is not the same cream with a different name.

Keep a Skin Diary of Acne Products Used

If you opt for one of the more expensive acne products - maybe after seeing a very convincing infomercial – you need to be aware that a trial of several weeks may be necessary to see positive results. Pay attention to your acne before you start to use the treatment and every few days afterwards so that you can tell if it is working for you. It may help to keep a ‘skin diary’, noting down the name of the products you try and what results you had with them.

Don’t despair if you do not see immediate results from any acne products you buy. Persistence and a willingness to try different things will over time result in the clear skin you desire.

Being infected by acne is sometimes caused by some of the simple things of our day to day life that we engage in and ignore others. To keep off these, here are some of my advices that will get you going with resistance to acne;

Cloth; You should avoid garments made exclusively of Lycra and nylon if you are prone to body acne since some synthetic fabrics can strap the heat and moisture against your skin. This creates a fertile breeding ground for the bacteria that contribute to acne.

Say no to alcohol; if you use a toner avoid products with high concentration of isopropyl alcohol, or common alcohol. A strong astringent alcohol strips the top layer of your skin causing your sebaceous glands to produce more oils resulting to dry red skin and possibly more blemishes.

Moisture;get out of wet clothes. don’t be sweaty or wet. Shower off immediately and change into dry clothes before you proceed with other chores. If this isn’t possible, change into dry clothes and wipe down as well as you can. Always use a clean towel and blot gently rather than wipe. Vigorous wiping can irritate your skin, driving make-up and sunscreen deeper into the pores.
